Overcomers Outreach Ministries Inc. (Overcomers Ministries) was established in 1988 in the Phillips Neighborhood of Minneapolis as an outreach ministry to Native Americans struggling with alcohol and drug abuse. Gordon Thayer and his wife Sheila, are co-founders of Overcomers Ministries.
Gordon is a Vietnam veteran and former tribal Chairman from the Lac Courte Oreilles (La-coot-ooray) Ojibwe tribe of Wisconsin. He experienced the trauma of alcohol abuse and Sheila was chemically dependent until they gave her lives to Jesus Christ. Based on their faith and personal experience, the Thayers understand the struggles of addiction and have devoted their life to helping others.
In addition to sharing the gospel of Christ, the vision of Overcomers Ministries includes meeting the felt needs of clients. This has involved providing services that offer the hope of sobriety with a Christ-centered life, assistance with housing, employment readiness, education and essential life skills.
Furthermore, in 1990 Gordon and his wife Sheila expanded their work to include an outreach ministry to the Mishkeegogamang Ojibwe Reserve (Reservation) in Northern Ontario.
